The Engineer who never Engineered – The Reason

Posted by Aaquib

  The essence of science and technology was always supposed to be in the solutions that exuded out of situations, problems and their incumbent challenges... that is why perhaps the ones who honed the skills of applying the same were called “Engineers” ... but the secret to coping with technology-oriented people is to understand their motivations. And possibly that’s where we miss the bus, the train and nowadays even a fleet of foot soldier carrying war crafts

(Read: The “Mass Recruiters”) ….

Motivation is a funny word, often ambiguous, sometimes misleading and mostly construed as philosophical, but its all the more interesting practically to consider its imminence in todays’ engineering requirements, their eventual urge for bare minimum qualifiers, let alone excellence…

Lets put your Engineering to test-

You walk into a room and notice that a picture is hanging crooked. You...

  1. Straighten it.
  2. Ignore it.
  3. Buy a CAD system and spend the next six months designing a solar-powered, self-adjusting picture frame while often stating aloud your belief that the inventor of the nail was a total moron.

The correct answer is "C" but partial credit can be given to anybody who writes "It depends" in the margin of the test or simply blames the whole stupid thing on "Marketing."

Sounds innocuous today, right?? But that’s the whole point of missing the bus, and all other modes… sometimes we forget the reason for the choice of destination, in hesitation of taking a glorified road… Our generation of engineers are no exceptions to this 21st century anomaly…. There is a college, you need a degree, a basic qualifier of social stratification, followed up by a bare minimum wage quantifying your buying capacity and eventually a life of foolhardy with people akin to the choices you make… and that’s so linear for the ones who get the last stage on a platter… for the rest it’s a struggle of identification which starts post that…

We academically skim across the multiple
tyrannies of a never ending curriculum drill, we cross assessments on the basis of benchmarked expectations, we even try to call ourselves industry oriented in the name of never ending set of internships and trainings (almost ironically as an add on to the basis of our industry)… we do not socially associate, we do not co curricularly diversify into the aptitude of organizing technically or referentially business wise, we do not ask ourselves the collaborative questions and often have isolated, incomplete and innocuous takes on issues which would be cake walks otherwise…. Sometimes we turn into the mechanical designs we intended to make (albeit that too, in a very-very outdated form), eventually allowing for a representation of farce, a culmination of multiple interactions with the truth but never the representation of it.

Unfortunate, isn’t it??

But however paradoxical it may sound, we all begin (in India, of course!!) with a preamble to creativity, to dislodging the sense of anonymity which the course brings with itself (because of being part of the course that most of India takes up nowadays, as a sense of neo-liberation) and as an Individual who believes that Innovation (or better disruption) would be his/her biggest command of input for an expected outcome which would be appreciated…

The Preamble (or the supposed one!!) reads as follows:

WE, THE ENGINEERS OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a Technological, Innovative, Research Backed, Non- Divisive Centre of Engineering Excellence and to secure to all its practitioners:

INFRASTRUCTURE, open, experimental and representational;

OPPORTUNITY of design, expression, practice, development and prototyping;

FACULTY of support and of continued interactions; and to promote among them all

COLLABORATION assuring the sharing of the individual genius and the unified representation of stake-holding in solving the nuanced problems of the Nation;

IN OUR COLLECTIVE MINDSCAPE on this day of induction into Engineering, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS RESOLUTION.

Albeit even if this preamble truly existed, it would have had an equally farcical and dour implementation bed, as is the case with the original context, just because the perspective of all of it would have been so wrongly construed.

If I may have just given you the context of lack of motivation, let me allow you the time to contest the validity of the same, in the meanwhile support this conviction through a series of solutions (sector agnostically) eventually solving the achilleas heal of the “Indian Engineer”, because
he is a lot more than a mere
                          Bachelor/Masters of Technology/Engineering….

(This is part of a series of Articles written in conjunction with the imminent situation of the Indian Marketplace of misplaced, unplaced “Engineers”, who unfortunately find themselves on the wrong sides of the Industrial-Academia void that Exist in India)
